DIVORCE and Kids

Divorce is never easy but when kids are involved it is a thousand times worse.  I have known couples that have had a divorce and good relationships with their X for years then something happens and they end up fighting back in court.  One person wants to move out of state and take the kids.  The kids decide that they like Dad’s rules better than Mom’s and want to move in with them.  Many children even act out or become depressed after a divorce and often believe that the divorce was their fault.  There is always that Re-marriage with Step Moms or Step Dads that cause conflict.

Some tips to remember with kids; 1) Don’t say bad things about your X in front of the kids.  2) Encourage your children to be open about their true feelings.  3) Talk directly to your X and don’t make the child the go between.  4) Remind your children how much you LOVE them, and that the divorce is not their fault.  5) Be involved and interested in their lives.  6) Keep the long view in mind.  You won’t always agree with the parenting decisions your X makes so you will have to pick your battles carefully.  Some things are not worth fighting about.  Remember that DIVORCE makes children feel insecure, don’t make it worse by fighting with your X over trivial things. It is always a good idea to seek help and advise from someone not in the situation, don’t make your kids your counselor.  <>< Mark
